Martine Johanna

Martine Johanna is a Dutch artist based in Zetten, Netherlands. Her works combine figurative representations with elements of contemporary realism. Often autobiographical, her paintings explore the complex transitions between youth and adulthood, addressing themes such as inner worlds, personal struggles, and societal expectations. The figures in her paintings are deeply immersed in their own psychological space, with a vibrant color palette that conveys an ambivalence between harmony and unrest.
The role of women in a patriarchal society plays a central role in Johanna’s work, where she explores both the empowering and oppressive aspects of gender dynamics. Her art is characterized by an ongoing interaction between individual experience and broader societal contexts.
Johanna studied at the ArtEZ Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Her works have been exhibited internationally, in cities such as Amsterdam, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and featured in cultural institutions such as the Mesa Arts Museum and Collectie de Groen. Her work is included in numerous private collections worldwide.
In 2024, Martine Johanna participated in the Mack Art Foundation Artist in Residency program in Brooklyn, New York.
