The presentation of AOA;87 by the Japanese artist Noriko Ambe received Bronze at the Paper Art Awards during the Paper Positions Berlin 2024, bestowed by the House of Paper. The artist will be showcased with one of her works starting from June 15th in the group exhibition of awardees at the House of Paper.

Japanese artist Noriko Ambe (*1967, Saitama) crafts delicate, sculptural works reminiscent of topographical and organic forms through the cutting and layering of hundreds to thousands of sheets of paper. Precise cutting and layering produce fine lines bearing a deep resemblance to the growth rings of a tree. These lines not only represent the physical structure of paper but also a metaphorical journey through time. Each cut and layer symbolizes a past moment, while the cut-out cross-sections represent moments between the countless layers of time permeating the existence of a work. For Ambe, this act of following form or gradation is akin to connecting with the present moment. Through her work, she produces a piece of the „now.“ For her, the artwork serves as an interface between the material world and its spiritual dimension, akin to a rhythmic background beat.

The act of cutting has become her „language of expression.“
