ALEXANDRE MADUREIRA

I like it now more. Now it’s punk.

Alexandre Madureira’s (*1976, Porto, Portugal) early works represents a combination of motifs from everyday life, pop and commercial culture, and commonly known works of art from art history. Often a word, the title or digital icons are integrated into the composition in a collage-like manner, giving clues to the artistic approaches. In the combinations made, sometimes under a dominating title, the original meaning of the motifs are swirled through. In this way, and borrowing from Pop Art, such motifs, which have been prefigured in the general memory, experience new connotations. The Portuguese painter progresses from an initial focus in Pop Art past Dadaism and flirts with impressionist like methods to return to the old master‘s mastery of the paintbrush.
Madureira‘s most recent works, “Estiu a L,‘Embordà,“ and “She came to my birthday!“ are colorful and life affirming, purged of scandal, they are rather an autobiographical report. Since his Graduation in Fine Arts, School of Art and Design (ESAD), Caldas da Rainha, Portugal in 2002 his artworks have been shown in various group and solo exhibitions all around Europe, such as “RestArt“ Breed Art Studios, Amsterdam (2016), “There‘s no place like home!“ Galerie Leu, Munich, Germany (2017), “You will find me if you want me in the garden“ Werner Thoni ArtSpace, Barcelona, Spain, (2019) and “In no particular Order“ AOA;87, Bamberg, Germany.
